Led by knowledgeable and enthusiastic guides our Theatre Tours offer fascinating insights into this Grade II* Listed Edwardian playhouse. Giving rare access to areas of the theatre you’ll literally see behind the scenes of a busy theatre. Hear about the theatre’s history, our renovation project and the origins of famous theatrical expressions. Experience what it is like to stand centre stage in front of thousands, gaze up into the fly tower and see the complexity of lighting and set hanging plot and visits parts of the building that you wouldn’t normally see,
Tours are on the first Saturday of each month except January (open day) and September (Heritage Open Weekend).

From footings to opening night the building of the Kings Theatre in 1906/7 took thirteen months. Since its opening in 1907 it has been an integral part of Portsmouth and Southsea cultural landscape providing over 100 years of entertainment. The Grade II* listed theatre is an important and complete example of Edwardian playhouse from one of the world’s most renowned architects Frank Matcham.
